Where this stands

The shape is settled: seven nights in Tokyo, six in Kansai with Osaka as the base, two in Seoul on the way home. Two hotel check-ins cover thirteen of those nights, and everything worth seeing sits inside a ninety-minute shinkansen radius, so no day starts with packing.

What's still open is which anchors make the cut. That's what the Routes & picks page is for.

The rhythm, held as a rule

Guided day → completely open day → planned day, repeating, and no two guided or planned days ever back to back. The open days are genuinely open: nothing booked, nowhere to be. Guided days always land on the second day in a city — arrival day is for jet lag and a good dinner, not an eight-hour tour.

The four things that shaped everything

1 · Atlanta, not Charlotte

Delta flies ATL–Haneda nonstop daily on an A350 with Delta One Suites, and Incheon–ATL nonstop on an A350. That's the exact open-jaw — out to Tokyo, home from Seoul — as one multi-city ticket with no positioning flights. Charlotte has no nonstop to either city.

2 · Late October nails Nikkō; Kyoto will be early

Nikkō and Hakone peak late Oct – early Nov. Tokyo's city trees turn late Oct – mid Nov. Kyoto and Osaka peak mid Nov – early Dec. So the window is perfect for the Tokyo leg and roughly ten days early for peak Kyoto.

That's the right trade. Shifting later would put us in Kyoto at peak color and in the most crowded fortnight of its year, at the highest rates of the year, needing 6am starts to have any space at all. We get genuinely peak color at Nikkō — more beautiful in autumn than Kyoto is — plus Kyoto's early-turning maples with a fraction of the crowds.

3 · The points cover the two biggest lines

360,000 Chase points transfer 1:1 to Virgin Atlantic, which prices Delta One on a fixed partner chart rather than Delta's dynamic pricing — 60,000–80,000 points each way, four one-ways for two people. That takes roughly $7,000 of airfare off the cash budget. Details on the Money page.

4 · Mid-to-luxe, and the Hilton points go to the Maldives

Dropping one hotel tier freed about $6,660 and let us bank 900,000 Hilton points for the 2030 overwater villa, which is the harder goal. Japan's mid tier is unusually good — the gap between a $250 room and an $800 room in Tokyo is far narrower than the same gap in New York or Paris. What we lose is square footage, and the money went into food, guides and a third ryokan night instead.

Two dates on the calendar to know about

Nov 3 is Culture Day

A Japanese national holiday. Domestic tourists flood Kyoto and Nara. Whichever anchors we pick, that day should be low-crowd, indoors, or finished by 11am.

Oct 22 — Jidai Matsuri and the Kurama Fire Festival

Both fall in Kyoto the day before we'd leave Atlanta. Not fixable without moving the trip a week earlier, which costs the Nikkō foliage. Worth knowing it exists.
